Consumer & Personal Finance Course Management Guide

Introduction

The following knowledgebase provides insight into the management of Consumer & Personal Finance, an online credit bearing course.

Since the fall of 2014 and with funding from the New York State Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC), the City University of New York School of Professional Studies (CUNY SPS), and CUNY College Now (College Now) have offered Consumer & Personal Finance to high school students across New York City. In our direct work with students, we have learned much about the management of online, credit-bearing courses on behalf of this group.

The knowledgebase is meant to support faculty, higher education partners, and high school personnel who are new to working with enrolled students in the course. It takes many stakeholders to successfully manage an online, credit-bearing course for high school students. Each has its particular role to play in ensuring students’ success:

New York State Higher Education Services Corporation

The New York State Higher Education Services Corporation administers tuition assistance programs and scholarship programs, and conducts financial aid workshops for students and their families. With funding from the agency, as well as the support of HESC’s financial aid counselors and staff, students have been able to take advantage of the course, and deepen their understanding of personal finance.

CUNY School of Professional Studies

Since 2006, the CUNY School of Professional Studies has provided online and on-campus programs that meet the needs of learners who are at various stages of their educational trajectory. In addition to the school’s credit-bearing courses, certificates, and degrees, the Office of Professional Education & Workplace Learning at CUNY SPS administers grants and contracts to city and state agencies and organizational partners.

CUNY SPS served as the project manager in creating the curriculum for Consumer & Personal Finance, and maintains the course development site that is shared with HESC and its institutional partners.

CUNY College Now

CUNY College Now serves more than 20,000 students annually in credit-bearing courses, college awareness programs, and college transition programs. The program is a partnership of the City University of New York and the New York City Department of Education.

CUNY SPS relies on the established partnerships of high schools and College Now programs to recruit students into Consumer & Personal Finance.

College Now has also provided support at the high school level for teachers and administrators working in the high school liaison role.

HESC, CUNY SPS, and College Now are committed to the success of Consumer & Personal Finance online. With these guidelines in managing the course, HESC’s institutional partners should be more knowledgeable about our experiences with – and recommendations for – best practices in college-level education for high school students enrolled in the course.
