Appendix H: Certification Instructions for Senator Patricia K. McGee Nursing Faculty Scholarships

The Senator Patricia K. McGee Nursing Faculty Scholarship (NF) is a cost of attendance scholarship for graduate study in a master’s program in the field of nursing education in New York State. 

ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible for the NF Scholarship an applicant must:

  • Be a legal resident of New York State for at least one year.
  • Be a U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen.
  • Be in good academic standing.
  • Be a licensed registered nurse in New York State.
  • Be enrolled at an accredited school in New York State in a master's degree program in nursing or a doctoral degree program that will qualify them as nursing faculty or adjunct clinical faculty.
  • Complete and return a service agreement in which they agree to practice as nursing faculty in New York State for four years upon completion of their program.
  • Not be in default on any state or federal loan or on any repayment of state awards.
  • Not have an outstanding service obligation under another program

AWARD AMOUNTS

Recipients shall receive an annual payment equal to the average SUNY graduate cost of attendance (COA) or actual COA, whichever is less, up to a maximum of $31,098 per academic year. In all cases, the total of all aid received by the recipient cannot exceed the student’s COA.

Initial Senator Patricia K. McGee Nursing Faculty Scholarship award amounts assume half-time attendance. Part-time attendance is allowed and will result in a prorated award determined by the number of credits indicated on the certified Consolidated Scholarship Roster (CSR). The award will be adjusted upon certification of the CSR. 

DURATION

Senator Patricia K. McGee Nursing Faculty Scholarship payments are available for up to three academic years of graduate study. Recipients must complete their graduate program within three years receiving this scholarship. All recipients incur a four-year service obligation, regardless of the number or amount of scholarship payments.

CERTIFICATION

The CERT CODE, STATUS and COA components MUST be completed for the NF Scholarship for HESC to accurately calculate a recipient’s term award. Remember to enter term amounts.

Cert Code
Indicate appropriate certification code. Refer to the Consolidated Scholarship Roster Instructions and use cert codes 1-9 as indicated with the following exceptions:
Cert Code 1-Eligible – NF scholarship recipients are allowed to receive awards for part-time attendance (1-11 credits per semester).
Cert Code 5-Not Full-time – does not apply to NF scholarship recipients.

Status Field
Indicate the number of credits in which the student is enrolled. The student’s award cannot be determined by HESC without the number of credits for the term listed on the roster.

Enter actual term amount.

Other Aid
Enter any other grants and scholarships received for the term (with the exception of HESC Scholarships or Loans).

Budget Type
Since this is a graduate scholarship HESC determined all recipients to be budget type 4, off campus/independent.

Room and Board
Enter actual term amount of the off-campus room and board component established for your institution’s Title IV Cost of Attendance.

Books, Supplies & Transportation
Enter chart allowance. 

PELL
Not applicable to graduate students.

When calculating a Nursing Faculty Scholarship award the tuition component will be based on the sector of the school for which the student is in attendance. Actual tuition charges will be used for students attending a State University of New York (SUNY) or City University of New York (CUNY) institution. When calculating the award for students attending Independent Institutions, the tuition used will be the lesser of either the standard allowance (currently $10,370 or actual tuition and mandatory fees). Students may attend on a part-time basis; the awards will be prorated in accordance with the number of credit hours taken.
