Take admissions test(s) — SAT, SAT Subject Tests and/or ACT.

Narrow down your list of colleges by the fall of your senior year.

Take campus tours.

Apply for financial aid starting in October.

Gather applications for each college you plan to apply to. Know the deadlines and requirements. Most applications are due in the fall of your senior year. If you are applying early, know those deadlines and requirements.

Get letters of recommendation from your guidance counselor, teacher, mentor or employer. Don’t forget to send thank you notes.

Write and proof your college essay.

Ask your counselor to send your high school transcript to the colleges you are applying to. You will also have to send your midyear grade reports.

Schedule and attend admission interviews, if desired or required.

Look for acceptance letters and financial aid packages by April of your senior year.

Compare offers and notify the school of your choice by May 1. You will pay a deposit and  submit any other required items including your financial aid award acceptance.
